Latest Technology News: YouTube Shorts comments can now be turned into YouTube Shorts

Much like its rival alternatives from TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram, YouTube Shorts focuses on delivering an endless stream of content in a vertical stream. Similar to standalone YouTube web and mobile apps, Google frequently tests new features in an effort to further boost user engagement. The YouTube team is now announcing a new such experience for a small group of Android and iOS users, where viewers can take a comment from a clip they’re watching and create a separate short video from it.

SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT

The YouTube team support page detailing all new experiences talks about this new item in more detail. Officially defined as “a viewer-created short with commentary”, this test has some caveats in addition to restricted availability. First, creators can’t restrict the comment their viewers choose to make a short film, but YouTube says they won’t be notified when new content is created using a comment from their uploaded video. The author of the original comment will also not be notified.

Additionally, the viewer who created the new short will be able to find it on their channel’s homepage, in addition to the standard YouTube Shorts feed. As for viewability, only a “small percentage of viewers” on Android and iOS platforms will see this test enabled. The support page also didn’t offer screenshots of this new experience, so it’s unclear what it would look like.

While creators don’t control which comments are made into shorts, they can avoid this situation by disabling comments on their videos, the YouTube support team said. It’s too early to tell if this experimental feature will ever see a wider release. YouTube makes it clear that not all of its experiments are made public, so the fact that this one is could be a clue to wider availability at a later date.

The Google-run video streaming service is also running exciting new experiences targeting users of the YouTube and YouTube Music platforms. Last week, some YouTube Premium subscribers started seeing longer web previews while browsing the search bar. While some of these tests are pretty decent, some experiments tend to fix things that aren’t broken.

Although a little late to the party, YouTube Shorts has taken advantage of the hype around short vertical video content, popularized primarily by apps like TikTok and quickly implemented by Instagram in the form of Reels. A large portion of online users already access YouTube for their regular dose of entertainment, including but not limited to music videos, game streams, educational content, and even podcasts, to name a few, so Shorts’ inclusion was always on the cards for the service.
