Jack Black doesn’t know if he has to pay to keep his blue tick on Twitter.

“I don’t know if I’m going to pay for this,” Black said. Variety on the red carpet for The movie Super Mario Bros. premiering Saturday in Los Angeles.

“I’m a little embarrassed by the blue check to be honest with you. Maybe it’s cooler not to have checks. It’s really not cool to pay for it. I’ll see what happens if I don’t pay. I’ll call his bluff, see if he really takes my check,” added the actor, who voices Bowser in the film.

Twitter announced that it would start blue “end of life” check marks for legacy accounts on April 1 — meaning celebrities, journalists, and other public figures and business accounts who don’t pay $8 a month for Twitter Blue would be stripped of their checkmarks unless they pay. Verified checkmarks were free and selectively distributed before Musk took over Twitter.

Does Jack Black still have his mark?

A few days have passed since April 1 and most old account holders, including Jack Black, still have their check marks. That is, except for The New York Times‘ main account, whose checkmark was revoked after Musk replied to a tweet on the outlet narrative CNN that he would not pay to keep his symbol verified.

“Oh ok, we’ll take it down then,” Musk tweeted.

Other outlets that have also promised not to pay for verification, including The Los Angeles Times And The Washington Poststill have their check marks since Monday, April 3 – the day Twitter also changed their logo to the Doge meme of a Shiba Inu dog.

William Shatner also spoke out against checkmark-gate, tweet on march 25“What the hell are blue checks that disappear unless we pay Twitter? I’ve been here 15 years, giving my [clock emoji] and witty thoughts for the bupkis,” he wrote. “Now you’re telling me I have to pay for something you gave me for free?” What is the Colombia Records & Tape Club?

Musk replied, “It’s more about treating everyone equally. There shouldn’t be a different standard for celebrities IMO.

Shatner also still has his check mark since Monday.

Will Twitter continue to remove legacy checkmarks, or will Musk allow Black, Shatner, and the thousands of other legacy verified users to keep their little blue friends? Only time – and however Musk feels – will tell.
