Apple has announced the first third-party devices that support Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos when listening to Apple Music – and these are Mercedes-Benz vehicles. In particular, these are vehicles with the MBUX infotainment system in Mercedes-Maybach models, EQS and EQS SUVs, as well as EQE and S-Class. In other words, some luxury Mercedes vehicles produced within the last two years or so.
That’s really all there is to this announcement: if you own one of the supported vehicles and subscribe to Apple Music, you can listen to your favorite songs on Spatial Audio. Your MBUX system may require a software update.
But no press release from either Apple or the luxury car company is complete without exaggeration, so the joint release from both companies is full of beautiful words about how groundbreaking this is. Apple VP of Apple Music and Beats Oliver Schusser said, “Spatial audio is revolutionizing the way artists make music and fans listen to it, and it’s an experience that can’t be put into words; You have to hear it for yourself to appreciate it.” The release states that this update provides these vehicles with “studio-quality sound better than any concert hall, and gives drivers the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in listening with unrivaled, multi-dimensional sound and clarity.”
Excessive hyperbole aside, this is an important step for Apple as the company’s Spatial Audio technology is being used for the first time on non-Apple (or Beats) devices. And there’s nothing in the release to indicate this deal is exclusive, so we wouldn’t be surprised if we announce other automakers in due course.
