There are a plethora of great movies on Netflix right now, but as new and fresh projects hit our streaming services, there’s also good reason to revisit some classics and one of the most celebrated films of the modern world, get out, is an excellent starting point.

There are very few filmmakers in the world who can stand side by side with Paul Thomas Andersonthe author who elevated the quality of modern cinema with films such as The master, there will be blood, boogie nights and love stuffed with punch. In 26 short years, the filmmaker earned 11 Oscar nominations, working with Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jesse Plemons, Adam Sandler and Daniel Day-Lewis throughout his career.

Directing his first film in 1996, Anderson only gained cinematic vigor, releasing Licorice Pizza in 2021 with remarkable critical and commercial success. Grabbing the attention of audiences around the world for its 1970s style and contemporary cast, including Alana Haim, Cooper Hoffman, Tom Waits, Benny Safdie and Bradley Cooper, the film is known to be one of the most famous of the last decade.

Another film that inspired modern audiences at the opposite end of the cinematic spectrum was Jordan Peele get out, a film that almost single-handedly transformed the appeal of the horror genre, breaking down the barrier between mainstream cinema and independent cinema. Winning the Oscar for best original screenplay in 2018, the film became the masterpiece of a director considered an innovative creator capable of subverting cinematic expectations.

Speaking about the film during an onstage conversation with Peele and fellow filmmaker Greta Gerwig, Anderson recalled going to see get out in London in the middle of winter during the shooting of his film, ghost yarn.

Watching the film when he needed a ‘lifeline’ and something to ‘inspire’ him, Anderson says, ‘I went to the movies on Sunday night…it inspired me so deeply and enormously and it was also a link to my country, as special as that link may be, in fact, ironically, it made me homesick”.

Provoking significant laughter in the crowd due to the sheer irony of feeling homesick from such a terrifying film, Peele quips, “Who did you identify with Paul?” before Anderson finished his dialogue on the film.

Anderson wasn’t the only director to admire the film either, with Quentin Tarantino also publicly discussing his love for it. get out in a separate conversation. Explaining why the film has touched contemporary audiences so well, the director of pulp Fiction and reservoir dogs exclaimed, “I think it was two things. For black audiences, it was a movie they had never seen before but still wanted to see even though they didn’t know they still wanted to see it. The real original films are that they fill a bill that you didn’t know was missing.

Continuing, he adds: “There is a real mystery in the case of get outuntil someone ruins it for you and tells you everything, you really don’t know where it’s going… There was a confidence in the movie that Jordan Peele knows exactly what he’s doing and we’re just gonna have to l ‘expect ” .

With Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams and LaKeith Stanfield, get out remains a modern masterpiece from one of the greatest cinematic minds in contemporary cinema.
