What authentication app are you using?

[ad_1]

If you haven’t seen the big Twitter news this weekend, the people who run the app decided place two-factor authentication by SMS behind paid access. It was funny infuriating for several reasons, but one of the arguments I saw from those who seemed to agree with this decision is that 2FA SMS can be relatively insecure compared to other forms of 2FA (authentication apps, hardware key etc.). Okay, if this was an actual argument, then why did Twitter put it behind a paywall and specifically for those who pay a monthly fee? The vast, vast majority of 2FA users on Twitter (although extremely low percentage Twitter users) used the SMS option, so it would be too blatant to put it behind the Twitter blue fence.

As it turned out, the owner of Twitter was just tired paying a “fake” text invoice every month. I guess you won’t become one of the richest people in the world by letting $60 million a year slip away, right?

So that’s what happened this weekend. When Twitter announced this move because I would never pay for Twitter Blue, I fired up the Authy app and re-enabled 2FA on my account. It was easy enough. However, this got me thinking. What authentication app do you all use? There is no shortage of popular options these days such as Authy, Google Authenticator, 2FAS, Microsoft Authenticator and many more.

Feel free to share below which option you are using and why. I might miss out on something cool and I always hate that feeling. When I used Twitch a lot, I programmed myself to think Authy was the best choice, but that may or may not be true.

And please don’t waste your time in the comments accusing me of hating Elon. I promise I really don’t care. 🤷
