One of British Columbia’s largest film studios has been sold to a major Los Angeles-based real estate and film industry player.

Vancouver Film Studios (VFS), part of the McLean family group, is now owned by Hackman Capital Partners.

The studio includes 13 sound stages, construction factories and offices, and has been used for major projects such as Deadpool, The Flash and Yellowjackets. VFS has worked with an array of film and television studios including Disney, Warner Bros., 20th Century Studios, NBC Universal, Netflix, Apple and CBS.

McLean Group companies Pacific Backlot, which provides lighting, gripping and production equipment, and Signal Systems, which offers communications services, were also sold as part of the deal.

“Vancouver Film Studios has been a core business of our family business for 25 years and we (Hackman Capital) are confident that we will take what we have built to even greater heights,” CEO Jason McLean said in a statement. “Their expertise in the motion picture industry combined with our outstanding crew makes them an ‘all-star cast’.”

In the transaction, VFS retains its status as an independent studio with a backing network from Hackman Capital Partners.

“In a growing global production market, Vancouver Film Studios has a rare generational legacy, and we are thrilled to be its next steward,” said Hackman CEO Michael Hackman. “Not only is the facility purpose-built and state-of-the-art, but we inherit one of the best management teams in the business.”

McLean Group of Companies was started in 1972 as a real estate investment and development company, and is in its second generation as a family business now focused on film and television production, telecommunications, construction and l aviation in addition to its real estate projects.

Hackman Capital Partners is a private, vertically integrated real estate firm and the world’s largest owner-operator of independent film studios.

It has 19 production campuses covering over 10 million square feet in North America, the UK and Ireland. The company also owns Culver Studios and Television City Studios in Los Angeles and others in New York, New Orleans and London. One of its development-stage studios is Basin Media in Toronto.
