Cluster munitions, banned in more than 100 countries, release large numbers of small bombs.
Washington:
U.S.-supplied cluster munitions are in Ukrainian hands and are being deployed on the ground in the battle for Kiev against Russia, the House’s national security spokesman said Thursday. Blanche, John Kirby.
“We’ve had some early feedback from the Ukrainians, and they’re using it quite effectively,” Kirby told a news conference.
Mr Kirby said cluster munitions were impacting Russian defensive formations and maneuvers.
Ukraine has pledged to use cluster bombs only to dislodge concentrations of Russian enemy troops.
Cluster munitions, which are banned in more than 100 countries, typically release large numbers of small bomblets that can kill indiscriminately over a wide area. Those that don’t explode represent a danger for decades.
Each side has accused the other of using cluster bombs in the conflict sparked by the Russian invasion in February 2022.
