Double Palme d’Or Ruben Ostlund was named the new honorary president of Sweden Gothenburg Film FestivalScandinavia’s biggest film event.

The ‘Triangle of Sadness’ director will act as an advisor for the Swedish festival and “will leave his artistic mark on the festival’s program”, the organizers have promised. This includes the next 46e edition, from January.

“It was both an easy and a happy choice to accept this heavy title,” said Östlund, who will succeed previous chairmen Ingmar Bergman and Roy Andersson.

“We share the vision of a more vital film culture, without nostalgic throwbacks. We will have to do this work in many different areas, but I can reveal that the first for us to teach is the cinema audience.

“They need to learn the difference between scrolling for dopamine on individual screens and going on a show,” he added.

As reported by Varietythe award-winning director – whose satire ‘The Square’ was nominated for an Oscar in 2018 – is currently developing ‘The Entertainment System is Down’, set aboard a long-haul flight and inspired by Aldous Huxley’s dystopian novel. Brave New World.”

The film will be shot in English.

“Since I made ‘Force Majeure’, my goal has been to combine the best of American cinema, where you reach audiences, with European cinema, where you discuss society and provoke thoughts. And I think the public is really interested in that,” he recently said. Variety.

But he also has other ambitious plans.

“It was fantastic to win the [Palme d’Or] the first time. I never thought it would happen again. And when you win the second time, what’s scary is that then you realize it’s possible to win a third time. And then I would be the only one in the world. I’m sorry, but that’s the kind of fantasies I have.

Östlund showed his short documentary “Let the Others Deal with Love” at the festival in 2001. Now, more than two decades after his first visit, he will speak as the new president at the opening ceremony.

“Ruben Östlund has the artistic integrity, intellectual playfulness and international luminescence that make him an excellent honorary president of the Gothenburg Film Festival,” observed artistic director Jonas Holmberg, calling the director a “faithful visitor” to the festival.

“He is a critical sociologist, a passionate visual creator and a charming provocateur. It will be both joyful and stimulating for us to look together for the future of the festival.

The board of the Gothenburg Film Festival appoints the honorary president for five years, at which time it will be renewed or concluded.
