LYRICS
Watching light through water
I want to bend the way it bends
You slice like a knife through the surface
But what a thrill to see it mend
With no scar, no memory
I’m envious
Why pretend I’m not

Wading in up to the ankles
The cold speaks straight to my bones
Whole body and soul hesitation
I am a coward turned to stone
Stay there for centuries
So all of history knows about it

But hey hey
We made it to the longest day
And the sun, the wind the earth
Are wearing me away

The shame!
I wish that I was brave enough to dive in
But I never have been and never will be
I’m coming in hot then freezing completely
The shame!
I wish that I could say what I’ve been thinking
But I never have done and never will do
Still only knees deep
I’ll never be brave like you

Lighten up like a candle
I’m as likely to go out
You can sigh from the bottom of your lungs
Until the house gets blown down
One step, then two, then three
‘Til I’ve forgotten how to count them

But hey hey
We made it to the longest day
And the river’s ready current
Can carry me away

The shame!
I wish that I was brave enough to dive in
But I never have been and never will be
I’m coming in hot then freezing completely
The shame!
I wish that I could say what I’ve been thinking
But I never have done and never will do
Still only knees deep
I’ll never be brave like you

  1. Just saw you in Durham North Carolina at Motorco. Havent immediately liked a band this much since Unrest in 1994. Magical magical magical. Thank you for sharing your gift and work and smiles and joy with us. Good luck on the rest of your tour. You were all so beautiful. Also as a person who plays in bands, watching y'all troupe through songs with mechanical failures on your pedal boards and broken strings and odd lighting changes. (mwah) perfection. Cheers!

  2. I cannot believe that 3 weeks ago I had never heard of this band, and now these three singles are probably my favorite songs that I've heard this year. This one is the best so far! So incredibly excited for the record!

  3. In the 2000s there were a couple of pop songs produced by Dr Luke (About you now, Since U been gone, Teenage dream etc) that started just like this—straight, dry beat, downstrokes in eights. This song feels like such a brilliant elaboration on that style, and made even more infectious by your evident joy for playing together.

  4. You guys randomly showed up on my feed one day, and I thought "who the heck is this?" I've had Expert in a Dying Field stuck in my head for WEEKS now; you guys are so good!
