VALLEY OF THE SUNIdaho — The bumps have arrived.

On Tuesday, dozens of titans from business, media and technology came to play at Sun Valley Lodge in Idaho for the start of the annual Allen & Co Movers and Shakers Reunion.

The invitation-only conference will include three days of seminars and meetings that will be held away from prying public eyes, beginning Wednesday morning. So today was all about meet and greet at the posh retreat in Idaho’s scenic Sawtooth Mountains.

Arrivals began at Sun Valley Lodge around 11 a.m. local time with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Comcast chief Brian Roberts, Imagine’s Brian Grazer, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon, NBCUniversal chief Jeff Shell, President of Paramount Global Shari Redstone and investor Jeffrey Katzenberg among the first to check in, receive their agenda briefing books and strap on a mask before receiving a COVID test.

Between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m., black sedans and silver vans with the “Sun Valley” logo plastered on the side shuttled through Netflix Ted Sarandos and Reed Hastings, former Disney CEO Bob Iger, current Disney CEO Bob Chapek, Warner Bros. Discovery’s David ZaslavGoogle’s Philipp Schindler and marquee investors Warren Buffett and Henry Kravis (who was in charge for his entry).

The rush of big names on the pitch before 3 p.m. was unusual for a start from Sun Valley. The traditional peak time for arrivals is traditionally in the afternoon, which meant several reporters and cameramen did not make it to the scene to see the impressive list of early arrivals. The latest wave included Michael Bloomberg, Sheryl Sandberg (in one of her first big exits since leaving Facebook), Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, investor Wendi Murdoch, CNBC anchor and writer of the New York Times Andrew Ross Sorkin, author Bari Weiss, Snap’s Michael Lynton and Liberty Media’s Greg Maffei.

Throughout the day, the participants – many of whom were accompanied by spouses, children and dogs – took very different approaches when it came to seeing and being seen.

Zaslav came to the Duck Pond (aka the media enclosure) outside the lodge to speak to reporters not only when he arrived, but also when he was on his way to dinner. And he had a captive audience, as the head of Warner Bros. Discovery was the only one who stopped to give some taped quotes.

Sandberg and Chapek were among those who seemed to maneuver quickly out of sight of cameras and reporters. Hastings and Sarandos dodged the press together, diving into a dark van posted just outside the entrance after taping.

But the Sun Valley guests had no problem mingling with each other. Iger and Grazer were seen having lunch with their wives at the Konditorei cafe on the property. The two spent much of the day together, with Grazer also making time to sit down and chat with investor John Miller. Zaslav and Home Depot co-founder Ken Langone chatted for a while seeing each other just outside the lodge.

On Wednesday, Sun Valley guests will rise early to head to the lodge for morning sessions that typically focus on global macro issues and global policy concerns.
