“I’ve been watching these dark shapes
Caught in the shore break
These jagged rocks – like granite bones
Of shipwreck ghosts I tried so hard to bury”…

Thick storm clouds crowded low over the ocean in the pre-dawn darkness, and in the crash and spray of the waves, I could barely make out the massive rocks submerged under the surf.

But I knew they were there – giant, dark, and dangerous, like shipwrecks guarding the coastline. In a moment of honesty, my face and eyes dripping with cold sea-water, I saw what a powerful metaphor this was. I realized how many “dark shapes” – mistakes, failures, regrets – I had been allowing to haunt my life.

And just as clearly, I came face-to-face with the reality that Jesus was offering FREEDOM from all of it – guilt, shame, and regret – that He had already paid the tremendous price to set me free.

///SALT AIR
I’ve been tasting the salt air
Watching the light tear
Jagged lines in thunderclouds
And spilling out over the water

I’ve been watching these dark shapes
Caught in the shore break
These jagged rocks like granite bones
Of shipwreck ghosts I tried so hard to bury

Still the Eastern sky is brightening
Red rimmed dawn is still inviting me
To take these broken shapes and let ‘em lie
Shipwrecks and scars, leave them to die

I’ve always fought to be free – I’m free
Now I’m not afraid to die

Still the Eastern sky is
Setting fire to the night winds
I hear You calling in the darkness
I’mReady to leave this behind – I feel it I’m coming alive

And it’s not that I don’t care
Not that I’m unaware
But wind and rain against my face
Can wash the stains from unforgotten battles
