With exactly three weeks left before the opening of WWDC 2022, a respected analyst spoke about the flagship iOS 16 update, which is expected to headline the presentation.
In the latest issue of his Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman talks about the new version of the iPhone operating system software. “There are going to be major changes to the system,” Gurman predicts, including “new ways to interact” and “some new Apple apps.”
It’s unclear exactly what Gurman means by these predictions, but the theory of new interactions points to a redesign of how widgets work in iOS. As MacRumors points out, the home screen widgets originally added in iOS 14 are not currently interactive; which could be about to change.
As for “fresh Apple apps,” Gurman might simply mean that Apple intends to update—or “upgrade”—a number of internal apps bundled with iOS, such as Safari, Messages, and so on. But that’s standard iOS upgrade fees, and we’re optimistic that Gurman actually means that Apple is about to launch brand new apps, much like they launched Files in iOS 11, Measure in iOS 12, and Translate in iOS 12. iOS 14.
While the functionality of the software is expected to change significantly, its look and feel will remain largely the same, and Gurman explained that he does not expect a “complete redesign”. The last time Apple completely revamped the look of iOS was the controversial redesign of iOS 7 in 2013 – when the quasi-realistic “skeuomorphic” design language gave way to bright, flat colors – and since then, Apple has preferred to make small changes.
Gurman’s predictions are followed by much of the industry, though he’s not infallible: AppleTrack currently gives him an 86.4% accuracy rating. However, his predictions for iOS 16 seem plausible and are consistent with what we already know and what has happened in the past. If anything, they really could be criticized for being too safe.
iOS 16 will be announced and demonstrated at WWDC on June 6th and immediately released as a beta for developers to test. Following a series of evolving betas for both developers and members of the public beta program, iOS 16 will be fully publicly launched in the fall, most likely in September alongside iPhone 14.
