Is Netflix’s Pain Hustlers based on a true story?

Yeah! The film itself is specifically inspired by an article of the same name printed in New York Times Review in 2018, which was an expose by pharmaceutical company Insys.

Insys found financial success through the opioid pandemic, paying doctors what was called a “talking fee,” which encouraged them to provide a pain medication known as Subsys. The company hired young and attractive salespeople to persuade doctors, who often needed money for various reasons, to launch their product. Unfortunately, traffic from Subsys has made patients addicted.

Eventually, Insys would file for bankruptcy in 2019.
