Actor Janhvi Kapoor reacted to the claim that “Bollywood celebrity worship culture” is dead in the age of social media stardom. The actor said his father, producer Boney Kapoor, told him what true stardom was like back then, and that this shift in culture may cause filmmakers to focus on stories, not stars.

In an interview with Galatta Plus, Janhvi was asked what she thinks about the claim that “everyone is a star in the age of Instagram” and that “people keep moving forward”. She said, “I think that’s right. But I don’t think that’s a bad thing at all. People keep saying they want to be stars, but your job is to be an actor. There was a phase in our cinema where ambitious icons and ambitious cinema really… I remember dad telling me stories about how Rajesh Khanna’s car would drive away and women would take the sand and put it in their maang. I don’t think they would do that for anyone today.

Janhvi pointed out that this is not a bad thing. She added, “Our job description is to tell stories, to move people with our performances. I think it may be separate from our personality…I think the only dent it could cause in our industry is that the opening guaranteed by a star might not be the same. Which is good, because it might motivate people to kick their ass up and write gripping movies, instead of just saying, “Acha, yeh hero hai, film ko itne budget mein bana denge, do gaane daal denge, overture toh mil jayegi‘.”

Janhvi made her acting debut with the 2018 film Dhadak. She has since starred in Zoya Akhtar’s anthology film Ghost Stories, war drama Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, horror comedy Roohi, crime comedy Good Luck Jerry and more recently, the survival thriller. Mil. Then she will be seen in front Varun Dhawan in Bawaal by director Nitesh Tiwari.
