EXCLUSIVE: netflix renewed German spy thriller Cleo for a second season.

The show is set in 1987 and follows East German spy Kleo Straub, played by Jella Haase, who kills a businessman in West Berlin while on a mission with a secret Stasi commando. Shortly after, she is arrested by the Stasi on false allegations and reported by everyone she knows. After two years in prison, the Berlin Wall comes down and Kleo is suddenly free, but she soon discovers that the plot against her is far bigger than she could have imagined, and a sinister red suitcase seems to be the part. missing from the puzzle.

Cleo the first season was unveiled on a Netflix Europe mega slate which included nearly 20 projects in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, at which time the streamer pledged to double its investment in the region to 500 million euros ($482 million) between 2021 and 2023. other shows on the schedule included a historical thriller The Empress.

Cleo is produced by Zeitsprung Pictures under the direction of the team of showrunners Hanno Hackfort, Richard Kropf and Bob Konrad. Dimitrij Schaad plays alongside Haase.

Speaking to Deadline, Katja Hofem, Netflix’s vice president for German original series, said the season revamp is proof that the streamer is committing to multi-season shows.
