With the MacBook Pro M2 and MacBook Air already hitting store shelves, all eyes have been on Apple’s desktop offerings, namely the Mac Pro and Mac mini. On the Max Tech YouTube channel, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman shared new information about Apple’s upcoming line of Mac computers and what it means for the next round of M2 chips.
As for the M2 chip, Gurman expects the same variations as the M1 — Pro, Max, and Ultra, with a possible new Extreme model for the Mac Pro — but doesn’t think it will move to 3nm, as has been rumored. He suspects that the next generation process will arrive with M3 chips in late 2023 or 2024.
In short, Apple has several Mac M2s planned for this fall, including “spec upgrades” for the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. Gurman expects the new laptops to get M2 Pro and M2 Max processors with the next update, but without the new features of the 13-inch MacBook Pro.
The Mac mini is in line for updates this fall. Gurman said that Apple will update both the M1 Mac mini and the more powerful Intel version with the M2 and M2 Pro chips, respectively, but doesn’t think the machines will have a redesign as rumor has it. He said it would be “strange” for Apple to introduce a new Mac mini design after the launch of Mac Studio.
As for the long-awaited Mac Pro with Apple silicon, Gurman reports that Apple planned to release the M1-based Mac Pro “a few months ago” but “cancelled” it to work on the M2-powered model. He doesn’t expect Apple to release a high-end workstation until next year due to manufacturing and supply issues.
Finally, Gurman believes that Face ID on Mac is still a long way off. Despite the addition of the notch, he doesn’t expect it to appear in the MacBook Pro M2 anytime soon. In fact, he thinks it will affect more expensive iMacs first. This could happen with the iMac M3, as Gurman believes that Apple won’t use the M2 chip in a feature-packed machine.
