Luther Creator Neil Cross Says Netflix Asked Him For Meaningful Change For The Fallen Sun

Luther Creator neil cross reveals that the first victim on Luther: The Fallen Sun must have been a woman. It’s quite common for a Luther project to include a lot of violence in the film. Aside from an abundance of violence, these movie series are notorious for kicking off the movie with the murder of a man. While Cross thought a first female victim would be better, he shut down that idea after Netflix asked him to rethink his plan.

Neil Cross shared the reason he wanted to have a woman as the opening kill in the film. He explained to The Independent,

“It’s been mentioned before that people are uncomfortable with the victimization of women in Luther – not unfairly. The strange thing, however, is that, if one were to do the math, there are many, many more male victims of Luther than female. But for reasons I fear I interrogate too deeply, female victims resonate and frighten more deeply. So there was a defiant part of me in the first draft of this, which was, ‘. . . the victim is going to be a woman because it’s scarier.

After expressing interest in casting the first victim as a woman, Netflix wanted him to consider his decision. He said,

VIDEO OF THE DAY

“And that’s the only time Netflix said, ‘Do you want to think about it a bit?’ And I said, ‘Well, that’ll be less scary.’ I was afraid that was the case. But in fact, they were right.’ »

One of the biggest challenges for Cross was finding villains for the film. At first, the British novelist and screenwriter has no idea who to pick for Idris Elba’s villain. Not until the idea of casting Andy Serkis as the film’s villain was mooted. Rather than casting someone who can be intimidating to Elba, they cast someone who gives off the impression of being a psychopath. He said,

“The biggest problem with villains is how do you find someone whose presence poses a credible threat to Idris Elba? It’s not an easy thing to do, so I thought we had a very big challenge ahead of us. But in a meeting with Jamie [Payne, director] and Idris, I said, “Do we have a cast list?” and Idris said, “Oh, we should have Andy Serkis.” And that was it.

Luther: The Fallen Sun is now available on Netflix.
