As “Top Gun: Maverick“continues to dominate the box office more than three months after its release, Jon Hammwho plays Vice Admiral Beau “Cyclone” Simpson in the film, is still celebrating his success.

In an interview with entertainment tonightHamm noted that the Tom Cruise-directed sequel is the only film to top the box office on both Memorial Day (when it premiered) and Labor Day.

“It’s unprecedented in many ways,” Hamm said. “It’s one of the only top five [films] which has no one in a cape or on a spaceship. It’s a story about real people, it has a lot of emotional resonance, people really react to it.

Hamm is referring to “Maverick’s” placing fifth at the all-time domestic box office. Since its debut, the film has grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide and $700 million in the United States, second only to James Cameron’s “Avatar,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” and “Avengers.” : Endgame” from Disney and “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens”, which is the highest-grossing film in the country.

“It couldn’t have come to a more enjoyable movie,” Hamm added, praising the film’s cast and crew. “It’s so nice to see this happening to this younger generation of actors as well, who can really experience it, build on it, and see their careers blossom because of it.”

“Top Gun: Maverick” recently beat Marvel’s “Black Panther” become the fifth highest-grossing film in North America. With no major releases on the schedule this past weekend, “Maverick” continued its box office reign over Labor Day weekend.
