At the end of 2021, Apple’s smallest iPad received a major facelift. The 6th generation iPad mini features a completely redesigned design, including a borderless display without a home button, Touch ID on the power button, and the addition of USB C instead of USB. Lightning and larger display. It was arguably the biggest design change since the iPad mini was first introduced back in 2012. The Mini celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2022 with no updates, but the new 7th generation iPad mini looks set to arrive in 2023.
iPad mini 7 release date: when will the new iPad mini come out?
There have been no rumors about the next version of the iPad mini, so at this point it’s just a guess as to when it might arrive. To give us some insight, here’s when the last few models debuted:
As you can see, September is the traditional month for the arrival of the new iPad mini. Given the gap between the last two generations, the new iPad mini could arrive in September 2023.
But perhaps we won’t have to wait that long. According to LeaksApplePro (via Gizchina), we may see a new iPad mini in the first half of 2023, so a spring launch is possible.
iPad mini 7 price: How much will the new iPad mini cost?
The arrival of the updated 6th generation iPad mini has resulted in a price increase over the previous model. Then, when Apple introduced the new iPad and iPad Pro models in October 2022, the price (outside the US) went up even more.
Here’s how the price of the 6th and 5th generations was compared:
Since Apple has already made the leap to new styling and features in the 6th generation and raised the price again outside the US, we think the price for the 7th generation will remain the same, although it is still possible that the US could see a price increase.
iPad mini 7 design and display: will iPad mini look new?
On the rumor front, it has been surprisingly quiet, with almost no reporting online from the usual leaks and insider sources that have proven to be wealthy in recent years. Here’s what we’ve been able to uncover.
120Hz display with ProMotion
The screen is not expected to change from the current 8.3-inch, but new screen technology may be coming. A post on a South Korean website in November 2021 indicated that Apple ordered 8.3-inch displays from Samsung with a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz. If true, a post on Clien (translated here) could mean that the next mini offers the ProMotion super-smooth scrolling feature currently featured on the iPad Pro, iPhone 13 Pro, and 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. This will solve a minor “jelly scrolling” issue that some users have complained about with the current iPad mini.
However, it doesn’t look like this particular rumor is accurate. Analyst Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, doesn’t believe Apple will offer the iPad mini a ProMotion display just yet. He indicates that this will require significant hardware changes. According to Yang, this would require “an entirely new state of the art.”
However, we remain skeptical of this as “jelly scrolling” is fairly standard on LCDs, where text appears to jitter when you scroll up and down pages as this is common with image updates. In addition, ProMotion is one of the differences between the standard and professional devices that Apple sells.
New colors
IDG
One of the most obvious changes in the 6th generation iPad mini has been the new color palette that Apple has made available.
While you can currently choose between space grey, pink, purple, and starlight, there are some interesting hues available on the 4th generation iPad Air, which also received a new look in fall 2021. These include silver, rose gold, green and sky blue. . Therefore, it would be reasonable to assume that some of them are moving to a mini format, which instantly expands the possibilities for customers.
Now that the 10th generation iPad has arrived with a bold selection of colors to choose from, the iPad mini may have to up its game.
iPad mini 7 specs: what features will iPad mini have?
In a November 2021 Twitter post, FronTron suggested that the “Pro” iPad mini could have the following specs:
- 8.3″ ProMotion display with up to 120Hz refresh rate
- A15 Bionic chip clocked at 3.23GHz
- 4 GB memory
- Memory from 128 GB
Profunctions
According to FronTron’s post above, we may have seen some of the capabilities of the iPad Pro models shift to its more diminutive cousin. It has even been speculated that Apple might release an iPad mini Pro model. In this case, we could see the iPad mini equipped with a LiDAR scanner, Face ID, M1 processors, additional cameras, audio zoom, and brighter displays.
However, we think it’s more likely that Apple will keep them for the pros, but even if one or two make it to the mini, that would make the new model a very tempting proposition.
Increased storage
On the current 6th generation iPad mini, the base model starts at a rather measly 64GB of storage. For a device like the iPad, where you can store movies, TV shows, books, comics, magazines, games, and a wide range of apps, this amount can often be a problem, especially if you want to take your iPad on vacation or use it for commuting without having to manage storage.
While Apple has some history of providing low-capacity storage base models, we think it would be a smart move to upgrade the entry-level 7th generation iPad mini to at least 128GB. File sizes are constantly growing due to better cameras and software, so doubling the existing 64GB would be a very consumer-friendly solution.
Along with this, there is also the possibility of increasing the upper storage limit. At the time of writing, the maximum storage available on the 6th generation iPad mini is 256GB. Going up to 512GB would be a logical step, especially if the base storage moves to 128GB.
Improved Processor
The iPad mini 6 offers the A15 Bionic chip that is used in the iPhone 13, however this chip is at a lower frequency than the chip inside the iPhone 13. It’s possible that the next iPad mini model could offer an improved A15 (maybe A15). bionic), or the launch of new models could offer the same chip as the iPhone 14 series (we assume A16). As FronTron suggested, perhaps a 3.23GHz chip can be expected.
We don’t expect the iPad mini to feature the M1 chip like the iPad Pro, but maybe Apple might consider it in the future.
Best battery life
It has been suggested that if the new iPad mini uses ProMotion it will reduce battery consumption, however this does not seem to ProMotion is coming to the iPad mini soon, so Apple will have to look elsewhere to improve battery life. That said, Apple sticks to 10 hours of battery life for every iPad ever released, so don’t expect a big breakthrough.
