Following criticism from the Anti-Defamation League over comments she made in a recent interview with a British newspaper about Jewish people and their race, Whoopi Goldberg has released a clarification and apology.

“Recently, while doing press in London, I was asked about my comments from earlier this year. I tried to convey to the reporter what I had said and why, and I tried to relate this time. I never intended to appear as if I was doubling down on hurtful comments, especially after speaking and hearing people like rabbis and friends old and new weigh in,” Goldberg said in a press release released on Tuesday.

“I’m still learning a lot and believe me, I heard everything everyone told me. I believe the Holocaust was about race, and I’m still as sorry today as I was then for upsetting, hurting, and angering people. My sincere apologies again, especially to anyone who thought this was another rehash of the topic. I promise not. In this time of rising anti-Semitism, I want to be very clear when I say that I have always stood with the Jewish people and always will. My support for them has not wavered and never will,” she continued.

In an interview with the Sunday time posted on December 24, Goldberg was asked about comments she made earlier in 2022 that she was suspended from “The View” for 2 weeks. At this time, Goldberg, while in no way denying the Holocaust or minimizing anti-Semitism, expressed the view that the Holocaust “was not about race”. His reasoning was that Jews are white and can transition into white society in ways that blacks cannot, although this view obviously reflects America’s history of racism and not Nazi beliefs about Jews who motivated the Holocaust.

Asked about it by the Sunday Times, Goldberg tried to explain the situation and clarify these comments, without success. These new comments were picked up by several right-wing outlets and the uproar was rekindled. On Tuesday, ADL leader Jonathan Greenblatt condemned Goldberg’s latest comments in a statement posted to Twitter.
