Dubbed the “Friday Night Lights” of hockey, a documentary featuring northern Minnesota high school hockey teams will debut in theaters in September.
“Hockeyland” follows the rivalry between Hermantown and Eveleth-Gilbert, two of hockey’s historic powerhouses that travel through Minnesota’s Northland each winter before often taking Interstate 35 to St. Paul for the famous state hockey tournament. for boys.

The documentary was shot before and during the period Eveleth-Gilbert teams up with rival Virginia to create a new school called Rock Ridge.
Directed and produced by Tommy Haines, who grew up playing hockey in Minnesota’s Iron Range, the documentary shines a light on the pressure prep hockey players face amid one of the best rivalries in the game. State.
Variety described Hockeyland as “Fast-paced on-ice action is paired with an observational approach to examine two communities and their teenage heroes through debilitating injuries, off-ice issues, family health issues and expectations of being a future star of the NHL.”
The documentary also received a solid review from NHL insider Michael Russo.
It opens September 9 and 16 in select theaters in Minnesota, North Dakota, Iowa and Washington, with 26 of the theaters scattered across Minnesota. More details on the opening date here.
