Kondotty: The state government is struggling to secure land for the development of Runway End Safety Area (RESA), despite the presence of a land acquisition office at Calicut International Airport in Karipur for the past 12 years.

The ‘Land Acquisition Office’ under the State Revenue Department continues to function despite the slow progress made by the Kerala government in acquiring land for the RESA. The same office will be responsible for acquiring land by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for the development of RESA.

The office was established in January 2011 to acquire 137 acres of land for airport development and 20 acres for family rehabilitation. The office, consisting of 24 civil servants, was inaugurated by then Revenue Minister KP Rajendran. Later, in 2013, the land to be acquired was increased from 157 acres to 224 acres. In 2016, it was decided to acquire a total of 485 acres, of which 100 acres were to be rehabilitated.

However, local protests and the government red carpet further delayed the proposed development plan. Even a plan to acquire 15.5 acres of land for the construction of a parking lot in front of the airport has also faced a roadblock due to local protests. Eventually, following the Covid-19 pandemic, the government decided to close the land acquisition office. The government was forced to abandon plans to close the office following several protests. However, civil servants’ salaries and other benefits have not been paid for months.
