Ben Platt Criticizes Supreme Court Ruling Against LGBTQ+ Couples

Friday, June 30 was a shocking day for LGBTQ+ people like The United States Supreme Court (SCOTUS) ruled in favor of a web designer who refused to create a wedding website for a gay couple. This sets a precedent for all sorts of different companies refusing to serve LGBTQ+ people – a discriminatory practice that has now been sanctioned by supreme justices.

During an interview with a Variety podcast, Ben Platt shared his immediate reaction to the news of this SCOTUS decision. “I think it’s a distraction from things that are actually important, like the melting of the planet,” Platt told the publication. “I also think it’s the people who are losing influence. It’s like [their] last fiery rager, ‘That’s not how it should be!’ before they are gone forever.

The actor added: “[That is] my only hope. That’s the only way to stay optimistic about it because otherwise it just goes completely back in time and hurts people for no reason,” he continued. “He feels so backward, so straight back.”

Platt is currently promoting the revival of Parade, where he played the main character Leo Frank. In 2023, this production won Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical and Best Direction of a Musical.

In July, Platt will begin promoting theater camp, which also stars her husband Noah Galvin. Platt and Galvin have been dating for years and got engaged in November 2022, so the latest SCOTUS decision definitely affects them as a couple.

Let’s hope Ben Platt is right about the people pushing these agendas!
