Bangladesh’s highest court has ordered Nobel laureate and microfinance pioneer Muhammad Yunus to pay more than $1 million in taxes on a $7 million donation made to three charities, lawyers said on Monday.
Yunus, 83, is credited with lifting millions out of poverty with his pioneering microcredit bank, but he has fallen out with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who said he was “sucking the blood” of the poor.
He was awarded the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize for his work in economic development.
“The Supreme Court… dismissed our request,” Yunus’ lawyer Sarder Jinnat Ali told AFP.
The court, which upheld a lower court decision, ruled on Sunday that Yunus should pay because the law does not support tax exemptions for donations to trusts.
Yunus had donated 767 million taka ($7 million) to Professor Muhammad Yunus Trust, Yunus Family Trust and Yunus Center between 2011 and 2014.
The court ordered him to pay a total tax bill of 150 million taka ($1.4 million), including 30 million taka he has already paid.
Yunus has been credited with helping eradicate extreme poverty in Bangladesh by providing microfinance loans to tens of millions of rural women through the Grameen Bank, which he founded in the 1980s.
Last year, Bangladesh’s anti-corruption watchdog ordered a sweeping probe into companies chaired by Yunus, and Hasina attacked him personally, blaming him for the World Bank’s withdrawal from a bridge project mired in corruption allegations.
When the bridge near Dhaka finally opened in June last year, Hasina said Yunus would have to be “dipped in a river” for jeopardizing its completion.
In March, 40 world figures, including former UN chief Ban Ki-moon and former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, issued a joint letter calling on Bangladesh to end the “unjust” attacks and harassment of Yunus.
