Avatar mania is about to go around the world thanks to The way of the water imminent debut in theaters. New movie releases December slates are naturally shaking, as James Cameron’s return to Pandora could be the most anticipated cinematic event of 2022, with at least three more sequels planned.
Producer Jon Landau doesn’t see all blue in his future, however, as at the premiere of Avatar: The Way of the Waterhe gave a hopeful update on where the potential sequel to Alita: battle angel currently stands. While talking to Deadline hitting the blue carpet for this latest potential blockbuster, Landau was asked what projects he was looking forward to tackling outside of Avatar. With a smile on his face, here’s what he had to say:
Well, there’s a little movie called Alita: Battle Angel that we’d love to come back to and do a sequel to. I spoke to Robert [Rodriguez] about it, and I hope it comes to fruition. … I never put a time limit on anything, because you’ll blame me.
It’s hard not to be excited about an update like this, especially when it’s been so long since we’ve heard anything about the Alita after. Earlier this year, Rosa Salazar confirmed that James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez are still “try like hell” to do Alita: fallen angel happen, which is equally promising.
What’s even more exciting is that Rodriguez is still talking about the movie starring Jon Landau, because when we last heard from the man, he was bet on Disney+ Boba Fett’s Book to help the cause. As he continues to keep busy through a series of projects on various streaming platforms, to even have Alita: battle angel always on Robert Rodriguez’s radar says something.
Some of these priorities are a spy on kids reboot on netflixin addition to the following Alita director’s streaming success We can be heroes. So it’s not like Rodriguez lacks other worlds he seeks to flesh out. Once again, the crazy faith and dedication of those who participated in the first Alita the movie rages on, continuing to keep fans as invested as the creatives.
Even with Avatar: The Way of the Water dominating the conversation, hearing Jon Landau banging the drums to keep those sequel hopes alive is a beautiful thing to behold. Should Avatar 2 marks the beginning of a promising sequel that extends to the potential Avatar 6 and sevenone would hope that he and James Cameron would use some of that weight to give this battle angel his wings.
