Something nasty fun happens that way. Spooky season is in full swing, so for Austin residents looking to have a good time this Halloween, here’s a roundup of some great local spooky events.
House of Torment Haunted House
When: Now until November 5
This well-known Austin haunted house has been around for 20 years and operates for most of October. Attractions include The Abominations, Tormented, and Return to Illusion Manor. Buy your tickets at houseoftorment.com.
Texas Pumpkin Festival
When: Now until October 30
This pumpkin patch, located at 8760 RM 2243 in Leander, has 750,000 pounds of pumpkins and squash. The patch welcomes customers from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and will be closed on Mondays. Admission on Tuesday is free, Wednesday and Thursday is $5 per person, and Friday through Sunday is $10 per person. Friday-Sunday offerings also include face painting, ax throwing, train rides, and pumpkin smashing for an additional fee. More information: texaspumpkinfest.com.
Weird Austin motel floats
When: 12, 19 and 26 Oct.
Austin Motel on South Congress Avenue will screen scary movies at its pool. Seats are allocated on a first come first served basis and drinks are available at the pool bar. Things have already started with “Death Becomes Her,” and the fun continues on October 12 with “Scream,” October 19 with “Evil Dead,” and October 26 with “Psycho.” Doors are at 5 p.m. each evening and screenings begin at dusk. boo at the zoo
When: October 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, 29
The Austin Zoo on Rawhide Trail will feature decorations, a haunted house, and haunted train rides on select days in October from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are available at austinzoo.org/boo-at-the-zoo-3 for $19.95.
Panic at Paramount
When: 18, 22 and 23 Oct.
Paramount Theater and Hyperreal Film Club team up for seasonal cinema. On October 18, they’ll screen “The Faculty,” filmed in Austin, with a Q&A with director Robert Rodriguez, followed by a secret screening of a classic horror movie hosted by Rodriguez. On October 22, they will screen “The Strangers” with a Q&A with director Bryan Bertino, followed by a screening of “Re-Animator.” On October 23, the theater will perform “The Shining” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” Get tickets, from $11 to $25, at austintheatre.org/film/classic-film-series.
Central Street Trick-or-Treat
When: October 22
Families can have fun from noon to 3 p.m. at Mary Kyle Hartson City Square Park in Kyle. A costume contest will take place at 1 p.m., and a pumpkin decorating contest will take place at 2:30 p.m.

Halloween in the hood
When: October 22
Ranch Trails Park at Cedar Park will offer tricks, games, activities, music and food from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., courtesy of Stroll Ranch magazine in Brushy Creek.
Barktacular Howloween Dog Festival
When: October 22
Those looking to party with their four-legged friends can attend this dog-friendly event at the Round Rock Depot from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Offers include a costume contest, sleight of hand and more. Register on roundrocktexas.gov/event/barktacular-howloween-dog-festival-3.
Children’s Halloween concert
Where: October 23
The Austin Symphony Orchestra will perform its annual Halloween Children’s Concert at Dell Hall at the Long Center from 3-4 p.m. Costumes are encouraged! Buy your tickets at my.austinsymphony.org/halloweenconcert.

The Austin Seance

Brunch Bingo Halloween Drag
When: October 30
From 1-3 p.m., join the drag queens at Rules & Regs restaurant inside the Fairmont Austin for a boo-tiful bingo brunch. Participants can win prizes for bingo and best costume.
Official Austin Halloween Pub Crawl
When: October 31
This annual event strictly for ages 21 and over lasts from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and begins at the Coyote Ugly Saloon on East Sixth Street. In addition to drinks, the event will feature a costume contest and live DJs.
Texas Halloween Fireworks
When: October 31
A fireworks display will wrap up a free evening with face painting, a parade of vintage cars, live art exhibits and more at Krieg Baseball Field. The event starts at 9:30 p.m.
