When Zack Snyder had the opportunity to return to his Justice League and completing the abandoned film’s four-hour Snyder Cut, it received closure from a number of outstanding story threads. But in the process of finishing the film, he also got into a few reshoots that he wanted to be placed in the “Knightmare” version of Earth that was teased in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. This brutal Scorched Earth reality is said to have occurred after Superman (Henry Cavill) breaks away from reality and becomes “evil,” siding with Darkseid and blaming Batman (Ben Affleck) for the death of Lois Lane (Amy Adams). But there was a line of dialogue in the reshoots that I thought was important, so when I had the chance, I asked Snyder about it.
Zack Snyder screened the ultimate edition of batman versus superman in Pasadena for SnyderCon, and asked me to moderate the Q&A following the screening. When you answer a question from a fan about the circumstances that led to the death of Ben Affleck’s Robin, which we’ve never seen on screen, Snyder explained the Joker’s (Jared Leto) motives for hurting Batman in one of the last ways he knows how. He brutally beat and burned Robin until the young man died.
It’s a story that Snyder tells he always wants to explore on screen. And with Joker in mind, I brought up a beaten story in Justice League reshoots, where Jared Leto’s Joker mocks Affleck’s Batman by saying “you need me” to complete an important mission and undo the universe that came out of Batman leaving Lois to die. . When asked why Batman would ever NEED the Joker in this Knightmare storyline, Snyder explained:
It’s a classic oft-explored exchange between hero and villain, where they’re forced to put aside their divisions in favor of the greater good. The Joker even gives Bruce a Joker Card as a sign of their truce. You can watch the scene NOW:
As for Robin’s death, which leads to much of the rift between Batman and Joker in that scene above, Snyder gave a few more details in his planned sequence, but actually stopped short. give too many details, as he said, it’s a story he still hopes to tell one day on screen. But he admitted:
There you have it, SnyderVerse fans. Hope. Zack Snyder isn’t ready to reveal the details, as he believes he may one day tell the story of what happened between Jared Leto’s Joker and an uncast Robin. Maybe on Netflix? Time will tell us.
