Latest World News: Will the heat wave in Europe impact your travel plans? – Doe

Europe finds itself in the grip of a torrid and dangerous heat wave named Charon, affecting several countries, including Spain, Italy, Serbia, Greece among many others. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warns that record temperatures, reaching 48.8C in some areas, are expected to worsen in the coming days. Reports suggest it will last until early August. In Rome, outside the Colosseum, volunteers offer bottles of water and set up giant fans to hydrate and make tourists comfortable. The scorching heat coincides with peak tourist season, worrying travelers and locals alike.

Traveler experiences and precautions

Delhi HR Manager Neha Yadav shares her experience of a recent holiday in Paris, France, where extreme temperatures surprised her. As if dealing with it in Delhi wasn’t enough. Luckily the homestay we had booked placed extra pedestal fans in the bedrooms as there was no provision for air conditioning. Also, it was obvious that the rental car would be air-conditioned, but it wasn’t. We only realized when we picked up the vehicle and the heat was unbearable which made the road trip so uncomfortable! she says.

However, some tourists are not deterred by the heat wave. Sunita Sharma from Faridabad, who is flying to Europe for two weeks, is prepared to take similar precautions to those she follows in the scorching weather in Delhi, such as using sunscreen and staying hydrated. The heat wave in Europe is now an annual phenomenon, she adds. While Gurugram-based research analyst Dhruv Wadhwa, who is looking forward to a vacation in August, plans to change his itinerary to a cooler destination.

No cancellations, but change of itinerary, according to tour operators

We continue to see demand for Europe despite the current weather conditions. While we haven’t seen any trends of customers canceling or postponing their travel plans, many are opting for destinations such as Scandinavia, Croatia and Eastern Europe, as well as former CIS countries such as Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Georgia, due to cooler climates. Schengen visa challenges have diminished considerably and this is moving us forward, informs Rajeev Kale, President and Country Head, Holidays, MICE, Visa, Thomas Cook (India) Limited. Daniel Dsouza, President and Country Head, Vacations, SOTC Travel, agrees and adds: We are (also not) seeing any impact on bookings due to the current weather conditions; however, we continue to monitor the situation and keep our customers informed.

Tourist hotspots battling extreme heat

Amid the onslaught of heat waves, Greece has been forced to close its famous Acropolis in Athens during the day to protect visitors from the extreme heat. In La Palma, Spain, nearly a thousand tourists were evacuated when temperatures reached 60C due to a nearby fire. The situation was no better in Croatia, where violent fires also prompted evacuations. In Italy, in Sardinia, a British tourist had to be airlifted from the beach after losing consciousness due to the oppressive heat.

Tips for a safe trip

To stay safe during the heatwave, travelers are advised to stay hydrated (carry a thermo-steel bottle and, if possible, carry oral rehydration solutions), use sunscreen, avoid excess caffeine and alcohol, find air-conditioned places to rest, and wear loose, light-colored clothing and shoes; wear a cap or umbrella or portable mini-fans, if necessary. Travel insurance for medical emergencies and confirmation of the availability of air conditioning in accommodations and rental cars are also essential precautions.
