When children at Sandy Hook were slain in 2013, many wondered aloud: if this isn’t enough to get Congress to act, nothing is. And nothing has been. Now America grieves the second worst K-12 in its history at Uvalde Elementary School without even remedial action from Congress, and as a desperate America searches for what knocked us off the path this far, New Yorker writer Jessica Winter points out it’s not a fault at all—it’s part of the design.

“If the leaders of this political movement, which in Texas managed to ban most abortions and criminalize health care for trans kids in the space of a school year, took real offense to murdered children, they would never simply accept their deaths as the unfortunate cost of honoring the Founding Fathers’ right to take up muskets against hypothetical government tyranny. They would act. If America were not afraid to know itself, we could more readily accept that gun-rights advocates are enthralled with violent sorrow. This is the America they envisaged. It is what they worked so hard for. Their thoughts and prayers have been answered.“

  1. The USA has the highest number of guns per person in the whole world. If having more guns makes us safer, as the GOP keeps claiming, then shouldn’t we have the lowest number of mass shootings and gun violence? As opposed to having the highest of both in the developed world…
The emperor has no clothes 😒

  2. More people have been shot in Chicago this year than all school shooting since columbine and it’s only may.

  3. So the cops let this go on for over 40 minutes. In reality the only person you can count on to keep you safe is you. Its wild realizing your actually on your own in this world. No heros.

  4. Everyone, please send an email to the chairman of the board of the company who is hosting the NRA convention THIS weekend and demand he cancel the event!

His name is David Mincberg – he’s a
Democrat, and his e-mail address is: dmincberg@flagshipco.com

  5. Such a powerful opinion piece, looking forward to reading the rest 🙌

  6. 😂😂It’s so sad for our country to experience this senseless murder of the innocent children by crazy people who are allowed to access guns

  7. Should have written « seeing the United States of America , again. »
    Let’s be precise here.

  8. Republicans know when people are fearful, they will tend to vote conservative. They profit from this and that is why it won’t change.

  9. Saying this as someone who owns guns for over 30 years: I’m tired of hearing about rights. I’m ready to talk about responsibility. I’m ready to talk about the toxicity of American gun culture. I’m ready to talk about a firearms industry that has convinced thousands if not millions that the only way to be American is to stockpile your home with their newest, deadliest products. I believe in the right to own weapons. But that is not what’s at issue here. What’s at issue is that this land has been transformed over the past fifty years into a place where average citizens are participating in an arms race with their neighbors. Neighbors who they hate and don’t understand.

  10. Not about gun rights, about having no soft targets. Stop attacking guns, any skilled person could kill 19 kids and 2 adults with a knife.
