Discovery of Warner Bros.latest business plan? New the Lord of the Rings movies.

According Variety, the oddly managed media conglomerate has commissioned “several” new films based on JRR Tolkien’s books, which initially spawned three pictures and three Hobbit spin off. The cast and storylines have yet to be revealed, but new executives at Warner Bros. Discovery, Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy said in a statement that the move will allow the production company to explore new aspects of the Tolkienverse.

“For full scope and neatly packaged detail in both [Lord of the Rings and Hobbit] trilogies, the vast, complex and dazzling universe imagined by JRR Tolkien remains largely unexplored,” the two said. The films will be distributed under the Warner Bros. banner. New Line Cinema.

The last the Lord of the Rings the spinoff is power rings, the Prime Video series is set thousands of years before the events of Tolkien’s books. (Its establishment in this period is no accident – this is the result of Amazon’s complicated rights deal with Tolkien’s estate to adapt ancillary material related to the Second Age of Middle-earth.)

Since the merger, Warner Bros. Discovery has gutted notable Batman projects, postponed Aquaman And Shazam sequels, and revived Constantine — while announcing a price increase for HBO Max subscribers and cancellation — then resurrect — Discovery+’s standalone streaming service. Clearly, the business is still finding its footing, and what better way to make some money in the meantime than to commit – or re-engage — legions of fantasy lovers?
