Verizon pushes ‘major’ 5G upgrades to 6 more cities

When we indicated a couple of weeks ago that Verizon was quietly upgrading networks in major US cities, we weren’t sure how long it would be before we could give you another solid list. While we don’t have a list of 25 cities, we do have 6 more worth looking into as San Francisco is one of them.

Since Verizon posted this initial list, it has said it has delivered “major” updates to areas across Denver, Memphis, Nashville, St. Louis and, yes, San Francisco. And as with these other announcements, Verizon is specific about where the updates are happening, the percentage of people currently covered by their best 5G (ultra-wideband) and a clearer breakdown of that ultra-wideband access between C-band and mmW coverage.

Cities receiving Verizon 5G updates:

  • Denver, Colorado
  • Kissimmee, Florida
  • Memphis, Tennessee
  • Nashville, Tennessee
  • San Francisco, California
  • St. Louis, Missouri

San Francisco is the biggest name on this new list, and Verizon says 80% of the population is now covered by 5G Ultra-Wideband (UWB) thanks to C-band spectrum. Until this year, Verizon was limited in how much C-band spectrum it could use in San Francisco, but by 2023 they have doubled the available spectrum. They also continue to promote 5G mmW, the fastest of the 5G technologies.

As for other cities, some noteworthy gains include 74% of people seeing 5G UWB coverage in St. Louis and a whopping 95% seeing coverage in Nashville. Customers in Memphis will see enhanced 5G UWB in downtown Germantown along Poplar Avenue and the Modanna Training Center Academy, along I-40, the Snyder Freight Terminal, and the Mid-South Arkansas State Campus in West Memphis, Arkansas, as well as in units such as Wolfchase Farms, Abbington. Woods, Brunswick and Chaff Road. And finally, residents of Kissimmee, Florida now have 5G UWB on 51% of cell sites across the city.

I know T-Mobile continues to win speed awards from companies like Ookla, but this at least helps us see that Verizon is doing its best to try and catch up. I would like all carriers to do this breakdown of 5G improvements by city.
