Latest World News: US Highlights Turkey’s Leading Role in Grain Renewal

The United States is counting on Trkiye to play a “leadership role” in renewing the Black Sea Grains Initiative, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Friday, as Russia announced its withdrawal from the groundbreaking deal earlier this week.

“We expect Turkey to play the role it has already played, a leadership role in getting this back on track, ensuring that people everywhere can get the food they need at reasonable prices,” Blinken said in response to a question about Trkiye’s role in the grain deal at the Aspen Security Forum in the US state of Colorado.

Noting that Trkiye was instrumental in “getting the initiative off the ground”, in the first place working closely with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Blinken said, “They’ve done a tremendous job of getting this off the ground.”

“They’ve done a good job of holding it down at various times when the Russians were pulling out. And President (Recep Tayyip) Erdoan said, I think just yesterday, that he was engaged with President (Vladimir) Putin to see if he can bring them back to the deal,” he said.

As Russia continues its attacks on the southern Ukrainian port city of Odessa, Blinken said he saw “no evidence that Russia is interested” in larger peace talks.

The United States is working with allies and Ukraine “to look at other options,” according to Blinken.

Earlier this week, Russia pulled out of the Black Sea Grains deal, saying the Russian part of the deal had not been implemented.

The deal, originally signed last July in Istanbul by Trkiye, the UN, Russia and Ukraine, aimed to resume grain exports from Ukrainian ports that had been halted following the Russian-Ukrainian war that began in February 2022.
