Latest World News: US authorities conduct DNA tests on recovered human remains

After OceanGate Expedition’s Titan submersible imploded during its ill-fated dive on the wreck of the Titanic, investigators in the United States are now faced with a challenge: to identify the human remains found amidst the wreckage of the submarine.

Searchers in the vast expanse of the North Atlantic Ocean managed to recover substantial fragments of the doomed submersible, which tragically imploded less than two hours into its dive on June 18. Along with the debris, what appear to be human remains were also discovered.

A brief statement from the US Coast Guard revealed on Monday: “US medical professionals are conducting a formal DNA analysis of the suspected human remains which were carefully recovered from inside the wreckage at the incident site.”

The identities of the deceased are believed to belong to five people – Stockton Rush, Hamish Harding, Suleman Dawood, Shahzada Dawood and Paul-Henri Nargeolet.

After the implosion, OceanGate’s experimental approach to deep-sea exploration was criticized by industry experts, drawing international attention amid the fervor following the vessel’s demise.

The investigation into this maritime tragedy spans multiple jurisdictions, with agencies from the United States and Canada at the helm. Experts from the UK and France also lent their expertise to the probe. The US Coast Guard, leading the charge, has called in a Marine Board of Inquiry – the highest level of investigation available to them – to unravel the mystery surrounding the incident.

Learn more about the Titan submersible tragedy:

A US Coast Guard spokesperson confirmed that the investigation was still in the fact-finding stage, with all evidence recovered from the ocean floor being turned over to them. This includes the submersible’s titanium end caps and other salvaged parts, brought ashore in St. John’s on June 28.

Once the investigation phase is complete, public hearings by the Marine Board of Investigation will be convened. Empowered to issue subpoenas, production orders and summon witnesses to testify, the board will pursue responses in public view.

No date has yet been set for these hearings, which underscores the seriousness of the situation, as the Coast Guard reserves marine boards of inquiry for the most serious nautical disasters. Recent precedents include the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 and the tragic loss of 33 lives aboard the El Faro freighter off the coast of Florida in 2015.
