Latest World News: UK police launch hate crime probe after Sikh holy text blockade

LONDON: ONE hate crime investigation was opened by the police after a Sikh sacred text was found damaged outside a residential address in Leeds, northern England.

The damaged pieces of the holy text were initially thought to have been put in the victim’s trash can by an unknown suspect after being put in the garbage collection on July 11. But that was ruled out after officers visited the victim this week to get a fuller account.

“Any crime like this that is perceived by the victim or anyone else to be motivated by hostility or prejudice towards their race or religion is treated as a hate crime, and we treat all incidents of this nature very seriously,” said Chief Superintendent Steve Dodds, Leeds District Commander for West Yorkshire Police.
“It is completely unacceptable for anyone to deliberately damage a holy text with the aim of offending the victim as a member of the Sikh community. We have launched a criminal investigation by detectives from the CID district of Leeds who are carrying out thorough investigations to establish all the circumstances of this incident and identify who is responsible,” he said.
Dodds said police appreciate the incident has caused understandable concern in the local Sikh community and beyond.
“We are working closely with key community representatives to reassure them and keep them informed as we move forward with our investigation. Officers from our local Neighborhood Policing Teams and other engagement officers well-established communities will also support our work to reassure the community following this incident,” he said.
