Latest Technology News: Twitter restricts DMs for unverified accounts to reduce spam

Microblogging platform Twitter announced on Saturday that it has restricted direct messages (DMs) for unverified accounts in a bid to reduce spam on the platform.

The company also said it will soon implement more changes in its efforts to reduce spam in direct messages.

Unverified accounts will have daily limits on the number of DMs they can send, the company said in a tweet.

Additionally, to send unlimited DMs, a Twitter user will now need to subscribe to Blue Twitter.

Twitter, however, did not specify what the daily DM limit will be.

Last week the the microblogging platform unveiled new message settings to help reduce spam.

Once enabled, messages from followers arrive in the main inbox, while texts from verified users that users don’t follow will be sent to the message request inbox.

Users whose permissions were previously set to allow message requests from everyone will be migrated to this new setting, but can switch back at any time, the company said.

This means that users who are not subscribed to the $8/month Twitter Blue plan will not be able to send DMs to users who do not follow them.

Sharing an update on this, Twitter said on Saturday that there had been a 70% drop in spam DMs.

We are seeing a 70% reduction in spam in direct messages compared to last week, the microblogging platform said.

This work is ongoing and we will continue to make anti-spam changes to make Twitter better for everyone, he said.

Earlier this month, owner Elon Musk announced that Twitter limited verified accounts to reading 10,000 tweets per day, in order to “address extreme levels of data harvesting” and “system manipulation” by third-party platforms.

Unverified users are limited to reading 1,000 tweets per day, while new unverified accounts are limited to 500 tweets.

Twitter also said TweetDeck, a popular program that allows users to monitor multiple accounts at once, will only be available to verified users starting next month.

These updates are in line with owner Elon Musks’ push to increase Twitter Blue subscriptions and impose restrictions on users who don’t want to shell out $8 a month for the plan.
