Are you excited that Apple might release an augmented reality headset? Tim Cook is definitely there. You’ve probably figured this out by now, as Cook has spoken out about his thoughts on AR several times. And he’s doing it again, this time for China Daily, China’s state news agency.
In an interview, Cook says that he is “very excited about the opportunities in [AR] space. Stay tuned and you’ll see what we have to offer.” Cook also notes that AR development is “in the early stages” and that there are “over 14,000 ARKit apps” in the Apple App Store.
A transcript of the AR part of the interview is posted below. The rest of the interview focuses on Cook’s thoughts on Chinese developers and innovation.
China Daily Newspaper: Chinese consumers are very enthusiastic about virtual and augmented reality technologies, but some of them are not very happy with the products currently available on the market. So what do you think is the key success factor for augmented reality products such as augmented reality headsets in the consumer market?
Tim Cook: This is a great question. I am incredibly excited about AR as you may know. And the most important thing for any technology, including AR, is to put the person at the center. And that’s what we focus on every day.
Right now, for example, we have over 14,000 ARKit apps in the App Store that bring augmented reality experiences to millions of people around the world. But I think, despite this, we are still at the very beginning of the path of development of this technology. I am very excited about the possibilities that we see in this space. Stay with us and you will see what we have to offer.
Some may take this as Cook’s confirmation that an AR headset will be coming sooner rather than later, though Cook doesn’t explicitly say so. Cook’s statement is a bit more forceful than what he’s said in the past, and Cook has been talking about AR for a while now. Cook said in 2016 that we are “going to experience AR every day” but that AR poses “really difficult technology challenges.” Then rumors about AR headsets leaked out for a while, but in the last couple of years, they have intensified, with references to realOS (the supposed OS for the headset) appearing in Mac products, and according to reports, the development has gained more momentum.
There were rumors that Apple would introduce realiOS and an AR headset to Apple at WWDC earlier this month, but that didn’t happen. However, many rumors remain that we might see something later this year or early next, and these comments by Cook will only fuel that fire.
