Latest World News: This small vase bought for 2.5 pounds from the UK Thrift Shop is Ex

The seller said he didn’t know if the vase was genuine or a copy.

A small vase bought from a UK thrift store for just £2.50 is expected to sell for up to £9,000, CNN reported.

A couple bought the 10cm tall ornament after spotting it in the county of Surrey in southeast England, on the outskirts of London, Canterbury Auction Galleries said in a statement.

“My partner Ahmet and I wandered into the charity store to have a look – I always head for the books and he goes off to get art and vintage stuff,” saleswoman Karen, who only provided her first name, said in the statement. “He’s not an expert, but he has great taste and an instinct for the ‘real thing’.”

“He came over and showed me the vase and I said something a bit dismissive like ‘very pretty’. ‘No, look at the base!’ he said and showed me the etched marks,” she added.

The Canterbury Auction Galleries specialist identified it as the work of Namikawa Yasuyuki, one of the most famous Japanese artists of the Meiji period.

The gallery’s co-director, Cliona Kilroy, said the object was “highly sought after”. BBC reported.

The seller said he didn’t know if the vase was genuine or a copy.

“Ahmet isn’t an expert but he has great taste and an instinct for the real thing,” Karen said.

The couple bought the object for a total of 2.50 pounds before contacting the auction house for an appraisal.

“The magnificent work from Yasuyuki’s studio in Kyoto features in several collections and is highly sought after,” specialist Cliona Kilroy, co-director of Canterbury Auction Galleries, said in the statement. “He and Namikawa Sosuke were the most famous cloisonné artists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries – the ‘golden age’ of enameling in Japan.”

The vase is up for auction during our weekend online sale on July 29-30. Depending on the final hammer price, the lucky couple are planning a vacation – and a generous donation to the charity that ran the unnamed shop, the auction house said.

The vase will be auctioned online on Saturday July 29.
