Latest World News: The United States maintains its ability to fight terrorism in the Pakistani region

WASHINGTON: The United States has said it retains the ability to conduct its own counterterrorism operations in the Pakistani region and is not dependent on Taliban promises to keep terrorists out of Afghanistan.

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller made the comments when responding to a question about recent terrorist attacks inside Pakistan from militant hideouts in Afghanistan.

Last week, terrorists attacked a military installation in Zhob, Balochistan, killing nine soldiers. Shortly after the attack, the military media wing, ISPR, issued a statement, expressing serious concerns about the presence of terrorist havens in Afghanistan and calling on Kabul not to allow militants to use their territory to carry out attacks inside Pakistan.

The statement also reminded the Afghan caretaker government that the Doha agreement obliges it to do so. The agreement, signed in Doha, Qatar, between the United States and the Afghan Taliban in February 2020, ultimately led to the withdrawal of American forces from Afghanistan on August 15, 2021.

Asked if Washington expects the Taliban leaders to honor the commitments they made in Doha, Mr. Miller replied: I will say that we will hold them to their commitments. But as we’ve said before, we retain the ability to conduct our own operations in the region to ensure that, regardless of the promises made by the Taliban and regardless of their relative ability or willingness to deliver on them.

The United States, he said, retains the right to protect American interests. When asked if he was confident the Taliban would keep their promises, Miller said: I don’t want to express confidence or lack of confidence.

Responding to a question about the Pakistani government’s plan to hold elections in early October, the US official said: I will clarify that we support peaceful respect for basic democratic principles such as freedom of the media, freedom of expression, freedom of assembly. The United States, he said, stands for the rule of law, not just in Pakistan, but around the world. These principles are the foundations of democratic elections. I have spoken about it both with regard to Pakistan specifically and, of course, with regard to other countries on numerous occasions, Mr. Miller added.

Responding to another question about an attack on a 150-year-old temple in Karachi, he said: We support the free exercise of religion everywhere and we oppose any attempt or use of violence to suppress this right of people to exercise their freedom of religion.
