KIDs will probably love this dashboard scattered across Nintendo’s most popular properties. But then kids, rarely the most discerning audience members at the best of times, will regularly confuse familiarity with fun – something this lazy image largely exploits. Musical motifs from beloved games, minor characters, nods to Mario’s legacy: all were greeted with thrilling shouts of recognition at the screening I attended. THE Super Mario Movie Bros is a frenetic Easter egg hunt for a movie that does the bare minimum to please its loyal existing fan base. Those less captivated by the mustachioed Italian plumber’s antics will wonder what Donkey Kong-armed barrel this joyless, noisy mess was scraped from.
