Korn has never been a stranger to horror.

Throughout the nu-metal band’s history, horror has run through much of their output, be it personal horrors Jonathan Davis lived as a young person, or the horrors they witness on a daily basis. It’s no surprise, then, that the group is often asked for inclusions in horror films, whether it’s Davis who sings in queen of the damned or the group serving “Proud” for the I know what you did last summer soundtrack.

Beyond the movies Davis is an avid playerand the worlds of horror and music collided for him when the band was asked to create the 2012 theme Silent Hill: Downpour.

Korn’s “Silent Hill” main theme fits the game well. It follows the story of Murphy Pendleton, an escaped convict coming to terms with his own crimes in the distorted reality of Silent Hill. The haunted town makes him re-examine his own actions and his psyche. Korn’s theme fuses brass and orchestral elements with the band’s heavy riffs. Davis embodies Pendleton’s inner torment in his lyrics, oscillating between melancholy and anger.

In an interview with FEARnet (and archived by Memories of Silent Hill), Davis opened up about his history with the show, saying,

“It was fun. I’ve always loved this game. I’ve always loved horror games and it was an honor for them to ask me to do it. I worked on a song that they loved , they liked the vibe of it, and I went ahead and did it.

He also mentioned that he had to do something very special and incorporate his son into the mix.

“My son is in it. It’s actually his first time singing with me. He’s the little boy in the background who sings songs and laughs.

While the game may not be a high point for the series, few things can top the 2-4 sequence, it’s commendable that publisher Konami chose Korn for the theme.

Check out the theme below. If you’re curious about how the game is, check out this classic let’s play.
