Latest Technology News: Sony’s best noise-canceling headphones are finally h

As expected, Sony finally unveiled the WF-1000XM5 ANC headphones a few hours ago – don’t confuse them with the already available WH-1000XM5 which are over-ear headphones.

The new buds come with “Sony’s biggest step forward in noise cancellation”, according to the company itself, thanks to three mics on each earcup, including dual-feedback mics, which improve low-frequency cancellation performance.

The headphones have Sony’s new V2 integrated processor at the helm, which “unleashes the potential of the QN2e HD noise canceling processor”. These chips control the mics, on both ears, to deliver “unprecedented noise-canceling quality” that can adapt to your changing environment.

Low frequencies are better reproduced than on the WF-1000XM4 thanks to the new Dynamic Driver X, which allows wide frequency reproduction and clear vocals, while the “Noise Isolation Earbud Tips” have “a unique polyurethane foam material” which reduces noise in the high frequency range.

The WF-1000XM5 supports high-resolution audio wirelessly via the LDAC codec, as well as DSEE Extreme for upscaling compressed music in real time. Plus, you also get 360 Reality Audio, with head tracking. Speaking of which, AR games like Niantic’s Ingress support immersive audio using new sensors and spatial sound technology.

Sony promises its best call quality on these buds, thanks to “an AI-powered noise reduction algorithm based on Deep Neural Network (DNN) processing and bone conduction sensors.” Your voice should sound crystal clear and natural even in a noisy environment, and there is a wind noise reduction structure.

The WF-1000XM5 are 25% smaller and 20% lighter than the WF-1000XM4, and they’re designed with comfort in mind, with a shape inspired by the human ear. Sony promises an ergonomic design that allows for a secure and stable fit. You get four sizes for the foam tips.

Audio notifications are supported, as is linking your device with Spotify, Endel and Apple Music to access your favorite music and relaxing soundscapes. You can also set something up to play automatically once you put your headphones on. Adaptive Sound Control and Speak-to-chat feature return to the new headphones, along with the ability to connect to two Bluetooth devices simultaneously.

The WF-1000XM5 is said to have an 8 hour battery life, with a 3 minute charge for an hour of playback. Wireless charging is supported and the headphones are IPX4 splash resistant.

They will be available in black and silver starting in August for $319,259,299.
