National Security Advisor Ajit Doval told Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday that the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the western sector of Ladakh since 2020 had eroded strategic trust and the public and political basis of relations between the two countries.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Department of External Affairs said Doval raised concerns while discussing bilateral relations on the sidelines of the BRICS NSA meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa.

According to the MEA statement, the NSA stressed the importance of continuing efforts to fully resolve the situation and restore peace and tranquility in border areas, in order to remove obstacles to normalcy in bilateral relations.

The two sides agreed that bilateral relations between India and China are important not only for the two countries but also for the region and the world, he added.

Wang is a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China and director of the Office of the CCP Foreign Affairs Commission.

Earlier this month, the Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar had met with Wang and discussed outstanding issues relating to peace and tranquility in border areas.

Sources said it was their first meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) ministerial meeting in Jakarta, since Qin Gang became Chinese foreign minister.

India has been locked in a military stalemate with China in Ladakh for more than three years.
