Self-taught Kenyan engineer David Gathu has turned his ingenuity and interest in electronics into innovations that help the disabled. Here, he wears a brain-controlled prosthetic arm that he and his self-taught cousin Moses Keuna assembled from salvaged parts. The headset picks up brain signals and converts them into electrical current, which is sent to the transmitter. The transmitter wirelessly transmits signals in the form of commands to the hand, which responds with movements corresponding to the wearer’s intentions.
