Latest Technology News: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 launching on July 26: Everything we’ve got

By Abhik Sengupta: The second iteration of Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked 2023 event will take place tomorrow, July 26 at 4:30 p.m. Samsung has already confirmed the launch of the new Galaxy Z Flip 5, which is expected to get massive upgrades. However, many eyes will still be on the new Galaxy Z Fold 5, Samsung’s most expensive and premium smartphone of the year.

As this will be Samsung’s fifth Galaxy Z Fold phone, the expectations of fans and watchers will naturally be high. However, several leaks suggest that we won’t see a drastic change in the design. In fact, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 may look similar to last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 4, perhaps, with a few minor tweaks. Does this put the phone in an awkward position, provided that many players including Google, Vivo and Tecno have entered the foldable phone market? Let’s find out.

What we know so far

Since the launch of the first Galaxy Fold in 2019, the series has seen drastic improvements. The biggest update came last year when the Galaxy Z Fold 4’s external display got larger and more intuitive. There have also been some tweaks to the hinge design to provide a smoother folding mechanism.

This year, as a render from SmartPrix shows, the gap between the two screens will be reduced thanks to a new hinge design, perhaps resembling the teardrop design adopted by several OEMs, including Motorola. This design offers modest but significant advantages. The gapless design will be more effective at repelling dust particles, solving an issue experienced by previous Galaxy Z Fold users, myself included. Additionally, it could improve the firmness of the folding mechanism and potentially help Samsung earn an official IP rating for dust resistance, a feature currently missing from current Galaxy Z Fold phones.

more power

Like every year, we can expect the next flagship to feature a high-end chipset. Samsung is already using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC on the Galaxy S23 series. The chipset offers a lot, whether for games or cameras. Samsung is reportedly leveraging these capabilities to improve the Galaxy Z Fold 5 experience as well.

Additionally, we can expect the phone to ship with Android 13, although it could receive Android 14 in no time. Samsung has also worked closely with Google to improve the Android system on all devices. Samsung’s proprietary apps have also improved dramatically over the years. We can expect tighter integration with other Samsung devices. After all, the South Korean giant is also launching new smartwatches and tablets at the upcoming Unpacked event.

Additionally, Samsung has also worked with Microsoft to optimize Office apps for this form factor. Expect a similar, top-notch performance this year as well.

Cameras

Since Galaxy Z Fold phones are primarily aimed at productivity-focused users, cameras aren’t always the top priority. However, its camera system is much better than what many other Android competitors offer.

We can expect the company to use a similar camera system to the Galaxy S23 Ultra on the Galaxy Z Fold 5. That means we’ll likely get a 200-megapixel primary wide-angle camera with an f/1.8 lens, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera with an f/2.2 aperture, and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. For selfies and video chats, there will likely be an under-display camera (4MP or 5MP). However, users will also have the ability to click selfies with the rear camera as the external screen can easily turn into a viewfinder.

Samsung may also consider adding a larger 5,000mAh battery instead of the 4,400mAh battery on the last-gen model. However, the charging speed can remain the same.

Price

When it comes to pricing, Samsung, like any other tech brand, will adopt a different pricing strategy. In India, companies generally play it safe by raising the price. Last year, Samsung increased the starting price of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 to Rs 1,54,999 from Rs 1,49,999. This year, there could still be a slight bump, as Samsung might use new hardware. The top variant with 1TB storage of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 was priced at Rs 1,84,999.
