The Samsung Galaxy S23 line is launched with one of the best camera solutions in the industry. But now, with a month to go before launch, we can see areas of improvement that Samsung decided to focus on from the start. First we have the camera, which is getting a big March update.

In a community post, Samsung announced a “Galaxy S23 Camera/Gallery March update” with improvements to autofocus, the gallery app, image processing, sharpness from the ultra-wide lens, and a host of other fixes.

In regards to some of them in particular, Samsung seems to confirm that it has indeed sped up the shooting process. Instead of waiting for full focus to be set, you can now press the shutter button. I can’t imagine how this will affect the quality of your shots, but it’s a change they’ve included. This means if you’re severely lacking in focus, you can go to Settings > Camera Assistant and turn on “Priority focus over speed” to try and tweak.

The other notable change has to do with harshness/flickering when shooting in low light or indoors with the ultra wide camera. You have a new setting called Super Steady On that should help.

Here’s the full list of changes in the March Galaxy S23 camera update:

  1. A feature has been added to the gallery that allows you to immediately delete photos in processing immediately after they are taken by the camera.
  2. For faster photography, the concept of autofocus has been changed: when the user presses the capture button, the user can take a photo even if the focus is not fully set. However, if you want to shoot after focusing as before, change the settings in the latest version of Camera Assistant. ※ Camera Assistant > Priority focus over speed (focus priority) On
  3. Improved sharpness/flicker and notification when shooting Ultrawide in low light indoors after enabling Camera Video Mode > Super Steady On. ※ “In order to take a good picture in Super Steady mode, I need more light.”
  4. Fixed a phenomenon where a green bar would periodically appear on the left when shooting in the back photo mode.
  5. Improved image stabilization when shooting in FHD60 after setting the auto FPS off in rear video.
  6. Improved line noise of sky streaks in medium and low light when shooting at high resolution in low and medium light. Optimized overall sharpness for high pixel count shots and improved jerky blur with OIS stabilization.
  7. Fixed a bug when shooting after Night Off in low light after selecting Shooting Rate > High Resolution > Speed Priority in Camera Assistant. ※ Camera Assistant > Frame Rate > High Resolution > Speed Priority, then Camera > Off. night or Scene Optimizer off.
  8. Fixed an issue where facial recognition would intermittently fail to be recognized after a third-party video call ended.
  9. Improved stability for camera movements introduced by other routes.

I believe the update will be released in Korea first, probably before US carriers approve it. The update is over 900MB in size and has build number S91xNKSU1AWC8. Since the end of March has arrived, don’t be surprised if this camera appears in Samsung’s April 2023 update.
