Russia’s Investigative Committee said on Sunday it had launched a criminal investigation into the murder of a Russian war reporter, an incident the country’s Defense Ministry had previously blamed on Ukraine’s use of cluster munitions.

The committee said on its website that Ukrainian armed formations targeted and deliberately fired at a group of Russian journalists working near Pyatikhatka in the Zaporizhzhia region of southeastern Ukraine.

He did not specify the type of weapons or ammunition used, but said Rostislav Zhuravlev, a journalist for the state news agency RIA, was killed.

He said his colleague and RIA journalist, Konstantin Mikhalchevsky, and two employees of the Izvestia newspaper, Roman Polshakov and Dmitry Shikov, were injured.

As part of the investigation, investigators will establish all the circumstances of the crime against media representatives, as well as the people involved, he said.

He said the committee chairman was nominating Zhuravlev, one of those journalists who always stood up for and reported the truth, for a medal.

Ukraine, which received supplies of cluster munitions from the United States this month, has pledged to use them only to dislodge concentrations of enemy soldiers.

Reuters could not independently verify details of the incident. Both sides used cluster munitions during Russia’s 17-month invasion of Ukraine.

The ammunition is banned by many countries because it rains down shrapnel over a large area and poses a risk to civilians. Some bombs usually do not explode immediately, but may explode years later.
