Kochi: Malayalam film actor Dileep has alleged an attempt is underway to extend the trial in the actress’ 2017 assault case in which he is accused. In his plea in the Kerala High Court, he also claimed that his life was ruined because of the protracted trial. The prosecution’s request to investigate the memory card examination was intended to prolong the trial, Dileep told the court.
The actress who was sexually assaulted by gangsters in a moving car in February 2017 had recorded the act on their phone. The memory card, a crucial piece of evidence, was later recovered. However, the State Forensic Laboratory reported to the Crime Branch that the memory card had been accessed more than once while in court custody.
A motion filed by the survivor asking for an investigation into the illegal access to the memory card was being considered by Judge K Babu, and Dileeps’ attorney B Raman Pillai informed the court. Pillai asked the court not to allow prosecution efforts to prolong the trial indefinitely.
In response, the High Court asked what was wrong if the memory card had been checked. Director General of Prosecutions (DGP), TA Shaji, stressed the need to ensure that nothing had happened to any of the visuals on the memory card. The DGP’s argument is not over.
The petition was released for a rehearing on July 31 taking into account the availability of the survivor’s attorney, Attorney Gaurav Agarwal that day.
