Not that this should come as a shock to anyone, but Google has updated its Pixel update roadmap, confirming that the newest addition to the family, Pixel 7awill indeed get 3 years of Android OS updates as well as 5 years of security patches.
These numbers mean the Pixel 7a will receive OS updates until May 2026, with security patches in place until May 2028. Surely there is plenty of time ahead.
What I’m wondering is that we have to wonder what are Google’s plans for the alphabet and Android OS versions. Obviously they have switched completely to numbers (Android 14 is the latest), but they still provide a codename that follows the dessert naming scheme. Android 14 is codenamed Upside Down Cake. Five years from now, when the Pixel 7a gets its latest security patch, Google will be on “Android Z” and I’m very curious what they’re going to do. Obviously they will be on Android 19 and it won’t be a big deal, but for us OG it will be an exciting time.
Good weekend.
