Thiruvananthapuram: TheJanakeeya Padanasamithi‘ formed to study the issues facing fishermen unveiled an interim report at an event hosted by the Latin Archdiocese to mark the first anniversary of Vizhinjam protest against Vellayambalam THURSDAY.

THE sign submitted the interim report after consulting politicians, environmentalists, other experts in the field and also fishermen who have been most affected by the construction of the port.
The committee had visited Vizhinjam and other areas of the district where severe coastal erosion had been reported. They also had an interaction with the fishermen.

The panel also consulted former Union minister KV Thomas, now the state government’s special envoy to New Delhi, in the preparation of the report and also sought his help in addressing the issues facing the fishing community.
The report studied the social, environmental and biological impacts of the construction of Vizhinjam Port and possible solutions. The interim report asked the government to find solutions to the problems of fishermen on a war footing instead of giving assurances.
There must be concrete discussions and effective actions on the issues. It was Oommen Chandy who initiated the move to bring Vizhinjam port to the state capital and the fishermen’s issues have already been raised. Their rehabilitation is one of the major challenges, as around 300 families still live in a godown.
The Adani Group has a key role to play in resolving the issues and I have personally spoken to the Chief Minister and other ministers about these issues. We need to hold a multi-party meeting to find an effective solution, Thomas said.
He also said that coastal erosion is another major problem and there are reports confirming this.
When I was Minister of Fisheries, the issue of Muthalapozhi was a hot topic, and no solution has been found so far. We need to find where the failings occurred and appropriate mechanisms need to be framed to address them, Thomas added.
