Western Digital My Cloud NAS owners are unable to use the My Cloud service and access their devices due to a hacker attack. According to a press release, the attack was identified on March 26 and the company is “taking proactive measures” to mitigate the attack, including shutting down the My Cloud service.
There is no timeline for when My Cloud will become available again. “This investigation is at an early stage and Western Digital is coordinating with law enforcement,” the company said. “Western Digital is actively working to restore affected infrastructure and services” and updates will be provided “as needed.”
As a result of the incident, an unauthorized third party gained access to a “number” of cloud systems. Western Digital believes that the unauthorized party “obtained certain data from its systems” but has not yet understood the nature and scope of the data. The MyCloud app stores files from the My Cloud drive on a WD server and allows users to access them on mobile devices.
The latest entry on the WD My Cloud Service Status website is dated April 3, 2023 and states that the service is disabled for My Cloud, My Cloud Home, My Cloud Home Duo, My Cloud OS5, SanDisk ibi, SanDisk Ixpand Wireless Charge products. The drives are also associated with Time Machine backups and Dropbox accounts, though those services are likely unaffected by the hack.
WD My Cloud drives are primarily used as a server in a small network, most often at home. They provide storage for network users who need to upload files from a computer or phone, and you can also use My Cloud to back up Time Machine for Mac.
My Cloud Home is currently Macworld’s top pick in our guide to the best NAS drives for Mac. We have flagged the attack in our guide and will provide further updates as the situation evolves.
